What do you plan to do in the future, career-wise?

I hope to work in marketing for a company in the food industry in the future!

What projects did you work on this summer?

I worked on two main projects, and a few smaller projects over the summer:

  • The first project was my demonstration project, which involved investigating ways that employees can make small changes in the work environment to help them eat healthier and be more active throughout the day.

  • My other project, the data and discovery project, aimed to determine if images on the packages of cake mixes and ice cream tubs portray larger or smaller serving sizes than suggested on the nutritional information on the back of the box. I really enjoyed the challenge of developing a system to accurately assess the serving size on the front of these packages.

  • Some of my smaller projects included helping the lab with tasks pertaining to Dr. Wansink's new book, Slim by Design, and helping researchers with other small projects. I really enjoyed discussing options for the design of the new website, slimbydesign.org.

  • I participated in conducting a study at local restaurant assessing the helpfulness of food choices if children are given a vegetable upon arriving at restaurant.

Any advice for future interns?

This past summer was extremely helpful for me in figuring out in what direction I want to go in the future. In this internship, there are so many opportunities to get involved. I would suggest participating in as many projects as possible because you may not know which project will strike your interest. Additionally, there are many different avenues in which to participate in the research, so don’t be shy and explore all there is to do!!
